I Didn't Drink Anything Fizzy For 31 Days & I Didn't Die!

Yes you read the title right.

I, a self-confessed fizzy drink addict, banned myself from drinking my fave liquids for a whole month.

And I don't mean I weaned myself off with a little bit here and there. I went full cold turkey with it.

I'm sure to some of you this isn't a major thing or achievement, but for me this is. Let me take you back a few years...

*insert dream sequence music here*

Back in 2008, when I was about 15/16 years old, I'd have coke literally all day. I'd have water for the night, but coke was my thing. I was on about 5 cans a day - sometimes more if I was out at a friend's party - and it only got worse.

By the time I was 18, I was on 8 cans a day, plus Red Bull (or the supermarket's own version!) and now alcohol as well. Surprisingly my teeth never suffered from all of this, other than a bit of discolouring here and there.

Jump forward to the end of 2013, and I had began to stop drinking as much. The caffeine was really fucking up my sleeping and giving me awful migraines. So in a bid to be good, I cut myself down to 2-3 cans a day and no more. That was a struggle for me. But I persevered and I'm at the stage where I can now have one or two cans of either coke or energy drinks a day and not feel too bad.

I know having so much sugar is bad for you and water is the better alternative, but I'm lazy and cans are so convenient to just shove in the fridge and then take out when they're nice and cool.

I'd also taken up having sparkling rosé wines again, so it was getting to be a little problem again. Not only was I now craving sugar all over again, I'd put on a little weight where the drinks were holding onto all the fatty foods I was also having.

So in May I just cut it out and stopped it all for the whole month. 31 days of no fizzy drinks at all.

I allowed myself to have sparkling water drinks - it was the fizz I needed, without the shitty side affects to it. I done 25 days straight before having a sip of some coke for a food blog post I was sponsored for, but then carried on for another 6 days afterwards with just water and some sparkling juice drinks.

I really struggled for the first 12-15 days, but it eventually got a lot easier and I barely missed coke or anything.

In that time period of 31 days, this is what happened:

  • I lost half a stone in weight
  • I managed to sleep a lot better
  • Had less migraines
  • Found a dozen new drinks I now love
  • I was a lot less lethargic
I had a bit of a slip in the middle of June where I was back to wine and coke for about a week - but I've been pretty good since then and have been sticking to water and milkshakes! I've struggled a little this week again, as I was out at a few bars and pubs a couple of weekends ago and slipped a bit last week - but I'm now getting back on track!

It's too hot for anything other than water - or a cheeky coke here and there - but I'm going to try and keep at this until my holiday at the end of summer!

Are you a fizz addict yourself, or are you good with your fizz intake? Let me know! And would you be able to do a month of no fizzy ban? I really tried... Hope you have a great day and keep safe :)

  1. I've got a few posts that are really similar to this! I didn't drink fizzy juice in October 2015 for one month as an experiment to see if I could break a habit (I've documented all this on my blog!) and just last month I wrote about how I've been caffeine free since about October as well, last year. It makes such an incredible difference to your health, and I have a lot of the same after effects you had! (Ie, able to sleep a lot better) cutting on caffeine in particular has also severely lessened my period cramps and the length of my periods too! I love knowing someone else has done the same thing and it's worked out well for them :)

    1. Ooh I will defo have to come check those posts of yours out! I wish I could do caffeine free, but I still like to have some now and then! I've been a bit naughty last week and have an odd fizzy drink here and there - but today I've not had one at all and I already know I'm going to sleep so much better tonight! xx

  2. Well done! I cut out all fizzy/sparkling drinks + coffee in 2014. Like you I used to drink a lot of Coke and at one point I was drinking 2 cans of Redbull a day. 6 years ago I cut out all alcohol and haven't had a drop since.

2 months ago I tried to drink an Appletiser and it was disgusting. Like someone was setting fireworks off in my mouth and gut. I did start to drink coffee again this year but not everyday. My favourite drinks are water and iced tea.
